Cycleworx was founded by the late Eugene Roux and his wife Stephanie in 2002. Over the years, Eugene and Stephanie have built a brand that has become very respected both locally, and across South Africa.

Our founder

Eugene was a giant amongst men, a giant in the community he so much loved, and a giant of the cycling industry, of which he was the voice, and for which he had so much passion. He was giant of life – Living life full throttle and living life in the service of others

He was generous with his time, no matter what pressure he might have been under. No matter who you were, and what your circumstance, he was always welcoming, attentive, caring and helpful.

With Eugene, there was always a solution, not matter how difficult the problem. He never dwelled on the problem. He saw every problem as an opportunity to find a solution and would always go out of his way to help those around him,

  • on the bike
  • off the bike
  • and in life

He was a mentor and teacher. His life was driven by passion and energy. He was courageous and brave.

The evolution of a beautiful friendship

Sean started cycling in his university days back in the early 90’s. As a regular holiday maker in Sedgefield, Sean met Eugene and spend many hours with him on the bike, exploring the area, and sharing their passion for bicycles, people and the Garden Route. It was through this connection that an amazing relationship and mutual respect developed between the two.

The passing of the batten

On one such day, not unlike any other, Eugene mentioned that he was looking to retire.

Sean, since his early days of cycling, working under the close supervision of the Lemmer brothers (Carinus and Hendrik) and Spook Groenewaldt at Village Cycles in Stellenbosch, always wished to have a bicycle shop of his own. This was his opportunity. He mentioned to Eugene that when he was serious about selling the shop, he wanted to be part of the conversation. And so, it came to pass.

In 2023, Sean and Eugene started discussing the sale of the shop, and as a result of their friendship, trust for each other and mutual passion for cycling, the sale was concluded very quickly.

Sean took over Cycleworx in March 2024, and works tirelessly with his team to maintain and to continue to grow the legacy that was left behind by their founder, Eugene Roux. Keeping people healthy, happy and on their bikes, and in this way, make a positive contribution to the community and its surrounds.
